When QualityWebDesign.ca first went online, we couldn't find it in the first 100 search engine results when searching for "web design edmonton". Now that's not uncommon -- web design is a competitive industry, especially online. You're competing with a lot of people for good search engine rankings.
We knew this would take some time move up the rankings, so we went to work on it and decided to use Google Adwords in the meantime. That's where you pay Google to have your advertisement show up on top of the search results. This is a good step while you're waiting for your ranking to improve.
Our next step, was to get a good placement in Google's local business results (a step that should NOT be overlooked, but often is). Local business results usually show up at the top of the page, so they give your business good exposure (if you know how to get on the top of the results).
A year later, www.QualityWebDesign.ca was showing up around the number #40 mark for "web design edmonton". We had moved up, but not enough yet. However, our listing in Google local business results was bringing in enough business that we discontinued using Google Adwords, saving our selves a bunch of money. A year later (October 2009), we were #1 on google.com and google.ca for "web design edmonton". We're happy with that!

Edmonton Daycare came to us because their website had been on the Internet for some time and was not showing up in Google search results -- or at least not in the first 500 results.
We did some initial checking and determined that we would be able to help them improve their search engine rankings.
We went to work on STEP 1: Google SEO Analysis. We did our keyword research, site analysis, copy analysis and wrote up our report. Frankly, it was a classic case of a website poorly designed for search engines -- but hey, who has time for this stuff when you're trying to run a business. That's where we come in.
After completing the search engine optimization analysis, we continued with STEP 2: Implement Google SEO Basics. This is where we take what we found in STEP 1 and fix it. Not everything, but just the basics. The job takes about a day to complete.
The results showed up immediately after the Google search engine robot's next visit to the website: On a Google search for "Edmonton daycare", their ranking went from 500+ to #18. Two months later it was at #13. Searching for "Edmonton day care" their website hit #14. A few weeks later it was at #12. Even though we focus on Google rankings, a recent check on Yahoo showed a ranking of #9 for "Edmonton daycare", #5 for "Edmonton day care", and #3 for "Edmonton daycares".
Improvements in Search Engine Rankings takes time. And continued investment. Links must be developed, content must be added.

Alright, I guess we're just bragging now, but we are delighted for our customers when we get results like this. David Miller came to us needing a domain name and a website. He suffered a terrible accident in the oilfield many years ago as a result of poor safety procedures. He learned a lot from his experience, and goes into companies to tell his story and encourage them to choose safety.
We optimized his website as we built it, for the phrase "Edmonton safety speaker". We don't even remember where he ranked at first, so it couldn't have been that impressive. new sites often take a while to work up in the search engine rankings because one of the things that search engines look at in determining rank, is how long the website has been around.
So, when David got one of those spammy emails offering SEO services, about a year later, we thought we'd check and see how he was doing.

This story is one of those that you wish happened every time you built a website. Russ came to us for a website and, once again, as with all the websites we build, we keep SEO principles in mind. Russ wanted us to build the site around the keyword phrase "balloon artist Edmonton". So we did. We incorporated SEO principles into the site as we built it, optimizing for "balloon artist Edmonton". Quite frankly, though, even we were surprised by the results.
In fact, we did screen shots of the results just so you would know we're not making this up.

Not bad, if we do say so ourselves!
But, we save the best for last. Try searching google.com or google.ca today for "balloon artist edmonton" and see where Russ's website shows up. Number 1 last time we checked!
Much to our horror, however, Russ came to us in summer of 2009, saying that he was moving to Kelowna! Yikes! Would we have to give up the Google #1 position? We did a quick re-optimization for both "kelowna balloon artists" and "okanagan balloon artists" and within 60 days, Russ was #1 in Google for these searches as well!
